Citizenship & Naturalization Requirements

There are a few requirements that must be met before a person can apply to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for naturalization.

General requirements include the following:

  • You must prove some level of attachment to the ideals and principles of the U.S. Constitution.
  • You must have good moral character.
  • You must have a basic understanding of U.S. history and government.
  • You must be able to speak, read, and write basic English.
  • You must prove that you have continuously lived in the United States for a minimum of five years before the date that you file.
  • You must prove that you have lived in the USCIS district or state where you apply for a minimum of three months.
  • You must have been a permanent resident (Green Card holder) for a minimum of five years.
  • You must be a minimum of 18 years old when you file.

We will assist you in collecting information about your case and the specific details of your situation, preparing and filing your application complete with supporting documentation, and guiding your study for the citizenship test.

What Happens If I Am Charged with a Crime?

Any challenges to moral character or legal problems can negatively affect your case and potentially cause the application for citizenship to be rejected. If you have ever been arrested or charged with a crime in the past, these issues will have to be addressed and carefully dealt with to achieve the desired outcome.
